Darryl Roman Burt, II – Jacksonville Jaycee Lost in Orlando Shooting

Darryl Roman Burt II , an active member of the Jacksonville Jaycees, was remembered in a Monday morning Facebook post that said, “We Stand with Orlando as we mourn the loss of our own.” The Florida Jaycees have also begun an online fund-raising campaign to help Burt’s family.

“We are all deeply saddened by this tragic event and the loss of our Jaycee brother Darryl,” the post continues, adding that local members will discuss ideas for a fundraiser benefiting Burt’s loved ones at its Monday night meeting.

Jacksonville Jaycees president Shawn DeVries said Burt became a member a year ago and the members are “deeply saddened and we are going to miss him.”

“He was very sociable and interested in making a positive impact for people in the community,” DeVries said. “He was passionate and always willing to help. He had just co-chaired his first Jaycees event. And he had just been recommended to be the treasurer for this board, which shows a lot about his background.”

JCI Florida welcomes visitors from JCI Japan

On September 21, 2015 VP Mike Souther had the honor of representing JCI Florida and welcoming Japanese students and members of JCI Urayasu to Orlando, FL for the final stage of their quiz competition. Their visit was in celebration of the 35th anniversary of the sister city relationship between the cities that are home to Tokyo Disneyland and Walt Disney World.

While 2015 marks JCI Florida’s 90th Anniversary, this year also marks the 100^thAnniversary of when Henry Giessenbier began the organization that would become the United States Junior Chamber (Jaycees), and eventually JCI. Over the last 100 years, Jaycees have created positive change in their communities by building world-renowned burn centers, hospitals, and community parks; implementing programs to encourage voting; and fund-raised millions of dollars to help combat disease and improve people’s lives. Through all of these efforts, the real impact has been on the lives of our members. JCI has helped active young citizens in communities across the United States to become the leaders of the next generation, and thousands of individuals who learned their leadership skills through meeting the needs in their community are creating positive change around the world.
